Why

Through my experiences working with people with diverse backgrounds and engaging in ongoing self-reflection, I’ve learned that one of my fundamental leadership identities is being an empowering mentor and instilling a sense of belief that all students have internal strength and endless potential. Through working with my peers at the University of Washington, I’ve learned that taking initiative is imperative to changing the status quo and not just talking about issues, but having a sense of urgency and taking intentional, proximal actions to address them in a tangible way.

To do this, I’ve learned that actions must be taken both by individual and collective action. As a student leader and facilitator, I’ve grown to be a creative collaborator. Through actively listening and critically reflecting, I've learned that building a sense of community to tackle challenging and complex social issues, there needs to be an established foundation of trust, cross-cultural understanding, and genuine sense of community. My involvement in the field of education and outside experiences in programs such as the Dream Project, the Pipeline Project, and working with Teach for America, have been fueled by my belief that a quality education should be a basic human right, not one of society’s biggest privileges.

Future Goals

In the future, I hope to continue to empower students and work collaboratively with others to take meaningful actions in dismantling the effects that uncontrollable factors such as race, poverty, and income have in determining the trajectory of one’s success. As a future educator and lifelong advocate for educational equity, I hope to continue learning and ultimately, utilize and define my leadership by the leadership development and growth that I am able to support in building.
